Why I am a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor.
I grew up a “bendy” or “double jointed” child without any real issues. Throughout my teens and early twenties I had a catalogue of minor injuries and saw a string of physiotherapists for treatment for years before learning that I was suffering with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome which can cause symptoms such as pain and stiffness in the joints and muscles, clicking joints, joints that dislocate (come out of the correct position) easily, fatigue (extreme tiredness),
recurrent injuries such as sprains, digestive problems and more.
I won’t bore you!
Understanding my diagnosis assisted me to take matters into my hands to manage this syndrome.
Pilates was recommended by my physiotherapist as it works with the deep stabilising muscles rather than the large surface muscles adorned by the perfect (or often airbrushed) images in the media.
At first I could not “feel” what I was doing, however with perseverance and practice I started to notice a feeling of stability in movement and with it a reduction in pain.
Continued practice over the years has taught me patterns of breath and movement which limit new injuries and manage those injuries which do occasionally occur by developing stronger, more
balanced and flexible muscles to support my joints with increased body awareness.
Pilates is a total mind and body experience leaving no room for stress and worries. I therefore
find it my perfect mind body
meditation, leaving behind the
stress and strain of modern life whilst working my body in a controlled functioning manner.
Thanks to Pilates I have learnt
to love my body despite its
limitations and enjoy its evolving journey. My wish to share this experience with others led me to become a Pilates instructor, and Pilates Harmony was born.
I believe that my own experience
with injuries and exercising
limitations encourages a keen eye
for good form and an open attitude to adaptation of exercise to suit
the individual.
